How to use ‘system restore’ in Windows 7 to fix computer problems.

Please note: anytime your having computer issues and attempt a built in windows repair solution you may render the computer inoperable. Back up important files before attempting repair facilities. However my personal experience,  system restore has never adversely effected my systems and often solved my problem.

If your Windows 7 computer has become slow or acting strange with blue screens or other malfunctions the best initial solution is to do a system restore to a prior date, when the system was working properly.

Sometimes newly downloaded software programs or installation of new hardware with drivers causes various computer malfunctions.

Windows has a utility built in that takes a snapshot. if you will, of the operating system several times a month. These would be called ‘restore dates’ you can go back in time and reset your system back to a date it was running properly.

The advantage to this is, it does not effect any of your saved files. It will however not include software installations you installed past the date you do the restore from. This means they will have to be re-installed after the system restore if you want them. This process if much faster than re-installing your operating system. Often a quick solution to many computer problems.

1.) Click the start button and type the words ‘system restore’ in the search box.

2.) Click the highlighted phrase at the top of the pop up search window ‘ system restore’. Once the service loads, click next at the bottom of the first window. This will bring you to the restore date window ( see screen shot below ).

3.) Choose a date from the list by clicking it. If you need to move back further in time you can tick the ‘show more restore points’ tick box.

4.) Once your date is highlighted you can proceed by clicking next at the bottom.

Another handy feature is the ‘Scan for effected programs’  button, as seen on above screen shot. If there is more than one person installing things on your computer or you may have forgotten about an application you installed this will list all effected programs that will be lost after restoring the computer.

5.) Read the information on this last wizard window carefully and click finish.  If you have recently changed your log in password, follow the directions on the ‘create a password reset disc’.

Once you click finish, your computer will reboot and after a brief process will be restored back to the date you selected.

There is a good chance this procedure will save you from a costly computer repair.

Laptop Care Tips

Caring for a laptop is easy but very important, if you want to avoid unnecessary premature repairs. Make note of the tips list below to get the most out of your laptop investment.

1) Avoid dust as much as possible
Dust is obviously bad for your laptop’s electronics, it’ll work its way inside the chassis and risks clogging fans and overheating your PC’s components.

It may be a bit inconvenient but keeping your laptop in it's case when not in use is the best policy. Be sure the laptop is properly shut down before putting it away. Hitting the laptop with canned air should be done every two months.

2) Do not place your laptop on a bed or any soft surface that will not allow the bottom fan to get proper flow of air.

This is a known laptop killer. Not only can it damage the fan by inhibiting its ability to turn but can damage the processor because of overheating.

3) Keep your laptop cool
As mentioned in tip 2 you need to keep your laptop from getting too hot. keep it out of direct sunlight and any unusual heat situations as much as possible. Heat can damage your laptop.

4) Beware of protruding connectors
The most common mistake in laptop care is hauling the laptop around with the power cord or headset connectors, connected. The protruding connectors especially the power plug if plugged on the side of your laptop, can easily be knocked into a door jam which if broken is a major repair. If it damages the motherboard the laptop is toast.

The cords can also be snagged on something as your in transport and be damaged.

5) Smoke can be harmful
Any kind of smoke near your laptop can eventually damage components inside your laptop.

6) Avoid using your laptop in the kitchen
Kitchen air is often full of smoke or grease particles. Kitchens are generally hotter than other rooms as well. Spilling liquids is also an increased danger.

7) Children and laptops
Young children and teenagers tend to be a bit less careful than adults. They are often unaware of the cost outlay of the equipment they are using which lends itself to careless use of your laptop. make rules and take the computer away from them for a period if they are caught breaking them.

8) Excess vibration can be harmful
Yes, your laptop is portable but carrying your laptop running and with the screen open is not advisable. If you bump into something it may damage your hard drive. Some computers have some shock resistant features but a hard collision will still often cause damage.

9) Keep virus programs up to date
Most laptops come with installed antivirus programs. The problem is they are often only active for a limited time period. make sure you either avail the contract or download a free antivirus software once the contract has expired. Be sure to first un-install the previous antivirus program before installing a replacement. AVG offers a free version to non business consumers that works well. Make sure you read carefully and download the free version unless you want to pay the small fee for the more feature rich version.

10) Backup your files regularly
Most laptops today have back up features that will use DVD's or CD's to keep your data backed up and safe. Don't forget to do this if you have important information stored on your laptop. Just ask yourself this question: If I lose all of my files today, what are the consequences?

Trouble Shooting Internet Connection

Trouble Shooting no internet connection, using ipconfig/iprelease/iprenew commands.

As an alternative to calling your internet provider to reset your ip address try the following commands through your windows operating machine.

This can save you time waiting on hold for a technical support person.

Lets first determine if your not connecting with you provider by using windows command  ipconfig

Click on the windows start button and type CMD in the search feild.

At the top of the window click on the CMD icon.

This will bring you to the command prompt with a blinking cursor.

If the IP address shown is in the range from 169.254.0.0 through 169.254.255.255, Windows used APIPA because the operating system was unable to retrieve an IP configuration from a DHCP server upon startup, and there was no alternate configuration.

Basically means you cannot connect to your service provider. If your pulling a 165 address lets try to reset your ip address:
To release and renew a DHCP-assigned IPv4 address, open a command prompt with administrative credentials and run the following commands.
repeat the steps above to reach the CMD command prompt and use the following commands.

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Windows will stop using the current IPv4 address and attempt to contact a DHCP server for a new IPv4 address. If a DHCP server is not available, Windows will either use the alternate configuration or automatically assign an APIPA address in the range of 169.254.0.0 through 169.254.255.255.

To release and renew an automatically assigned IPv6 address, open a command prompt and run the following commands.

ipconfig /release6

ipconfig /renew6

This is a good alternative if you internet service provider is busy with many tech support calls.
